Abstract
In the article the competitiveness of universities is seen as a system that provides excellence, which manifests itself in the quality characteristics of education services, the level of customer and stakeholders satisfaction, public and professional recognition and opportunities for effective implementation of the potential for sustainable development of the organization of higher education. The authors believe that the basis of the analysis of maintenance of competitiveness of higher education institutions is the concept of sustainable development as one of the areas of institutional theory and application of quality management system concept.
